The different stages in
pregnancy are called trimesters. There are three trimesters of
pregnancy.
It is important to keep track of what is happening with your baby and
inside your own body— for that you need a better understanding of the
three trimesters.
First Trimester
The first stage or trimester lasts for three and a half months or 14
weeks. During this stage of pregnancy you are likely to experience the
morning sickness, which can occur anytime in the day, and enlarged and
sore breasts. It is an important stage where getting enough vitamins,
minerals and nutrients, as they play an important part in growth and
development of the baby. But to know what is best and more essential
for you it is important to consult your health care provider.
Generally you need have 2200 calories per day during this period. A
well balanced diet with enough fiber helps not only in baby’s growth
but also in keeping the energy levels of the mother high. Nauseous
women would find it helpful if they have small frequent meals. Your
health care provider would prescribe vitamins. There is no question
that alcohol and smoking are big no-no.
A good exercise regimen as directed by the doctor, will help you
decrease stress and fatigue. But take care maintain fluid levels by
drinking enough water and care should also be taken not to over heat
your body.
Second Trimester
Second stage of pregnancy lasts until the end of the seventh month. It
is considered the easiest stage of pregnancy because most women will
start to regain some of their energy. During this stage the stomach
start to expand. People around you will also start to notice the
changes in you during this period. Some women may continue to have
morning sickness, but that is less common. During this stage you can
feel your baby beginning to kick and move. You can also know if you
are having a girl or boy.
Nutritional needs will be a higher in the second trimester— about 2500
calories per day. Fiber-rich, well balanced diet should be continued,
so should the vitamin supplements. And you may need to modify your
exercise regimen so as to protect the weight bearing muscles and
joints in back and abdomen. Care should be taken while lifting and
carrying.
Third Trimester
In the third stage of pregnancy you are likely to feel more anxious,
sensitive and emotional. But it is quite natural to feel that way. The
increased size of your stomach and weight of your baby can cause
increased pain, mostly in your back, and can making you feel more
uncomfortable.
High level of nutrition should be maintained at this stage as well.
Exercising should be again modified to strengthen and protect muscles
and joints; overall the exercise intensity should be reduced, if you
find that your body can’t keep up.
