Food During Preganancy

The major concern and quest of a pregnant woman in the modern-day is the concept of what safe and healthy food to consume on the stage of pregnancy. The million dollar question asked by the pregnant woman world wide, is nothing other than, what to eat during pregnancy. As a matter of fact, no drastic changes in diet are necessary for the pregnant. We can easily point out some common avoidable ingredients which usually props up on our menu.

A pregnant woman must primarily avoid Deli, Processed sandwich meat, etc. Which are tasty and safe while served fresh and steaming hot. Alas these foods are proven to be usually found being contaminated with bacteria’s such as “Listeria” which is usually safe if consumed, in case of an able bodied individual. But could be dangerous to a pregnant women, whose immune systems are delicate for the time being, and it could be life threatening to the unborn child. In a broad sense we can advice pregnant woman to avoid foods which also results in constipation and to prefer foods rich with fiber content which helps in digestion.

Raw meat is also not advised for women in pregnant stage, because it is not easily digested, and have tendency to stale quickly and get infected with bacteria, which could be hazardous to the mother and baby.

Consumption of alcohol is completely prohibited to the would be mothers because even moderate volume of alcohol consumed may also cause damage to the growth of fetus, and could result in developmental problems as well as anomalies at birth. Lactating mothers must also restrain from alcohol intake, because the new born baby will face distress who takes breast feed.

Raw eggs are also surprisingly in the warning list, like raw meat in the menu of a pregnant woman. They could be carriers of dangerous bacteria’s such as “salmonella’ which is the major causative for food poisoning. Raw eggs pose another threat such as they are present in disguise in various other food items, like ice creams, icings on cakes, Caesar dressings, mayonnaise etc.

Fish Consumption of fish must be done with utmost care during pregnancy. Although fish is characterized as healthy food. Some particular fishes such as Sword fish, King mackerel, Tuna, Sea bass, Tilefish etc. contains mercury which adversely effect the growth ,of unborn babies brain, or cause congenital anomalies.

 Pregnant woman must be warned to scrutinize the contents of the food they consume. In a broad sense we can advice pregnant woman to also avoid foods which results to constipation and to prefer foods with high fiber contents Dairy products: Unlike skimmed milk, and Pasteurized dairy products, Unpasteurized soft cheese and similar products are also prone to be contaminated. Imported brands namely Mexican cheese like queso, Gorgonzola, Brie, Camembert, feta are some of them. They must be used judiciously since some of them are safe to consume if pasteurized.
